The Big Benchmark: Ken Bell & James Read

It’s been an exciting week for Maine Hip Hop and we’re happy that we are able to keep it going by welcoming two long overdue guests onto the show last night, Ken Bell from The Big Easy & James Read from Benchmark Multimedia who are two of our official sponsors!  If you are a regular listener to our show or active in the local scene there is no doubt you recognize what a significant role these fine gentlemen play in it and it was about time we were able to get them on the program to speak about their efforts.  The Big Easy & Benchmark Multimedia have shown nothing but love and support for Appleton Radio and we are happy to finally return the favor.  Ken breaks down The Big Easy, home of Rap Night and so much more, and his passion for the local scene is contagious.  James gives us a view of Benchmark that we really haven’t had before, detailing the many services they offer which goes way beyond CD/DVD duplication.  If you are an independent artist we invite you to listen to the podcast and learn about some of the local tools & services you have at your disposal.  You know the deal by now, the first hour is all about the music.  Like we mentioned it’s been a big week for the 207 and we are happy to recap and bring you some of the highlights.  You can expect to hear 3 brand new Trails joints in the mix from their brand new LP called Anvils & Pianos with some ridiculous features! We also sneak in two new tracks that had videos released this week!  Spose’s I’m Starving and Shane Reis’s What a Wonderful World ft. Lucas Kennard.  We also gave away a pair of tickets to the Kendrick Lamar show this week so remember the drawing has already happened but we still encourage you to call our listener line and leave a drop.  207-200-4277!  Check the podcast below!

We also need to let you know that we’re taking some time off this summer due to the fact the studio turns into a sauna come June so this will be our last live show on Wednesday for a little bit.  Chances are we’ll be back sporadically over the summer to bring you podcast updates but the weekly live show won’t go down for a little while.  The 24/7 stream will always be there for you and we will continue to put our past 100+ shows in the rotation and, of course, you can download or stream them anytime.  We will still keep you updated on the latest and greatest happening  in Maine Hip Hop on Facebook & Twitter so make sure to “like” the fanpage and follow us!  Our listeners and the 207 hip hop community are what fuel us to make this show a success and it’s about to start raining new projects around here so we will ensure you know every detail as it happens.  Thanks for all your support and let’s keep things moving!

Dynamo-P & Micodin: Serious Problems

This week we welcomed back both Dynamo-P & Micodin to the program.  This was a bittersweet episode as it will be the last time  we will have Micodin in the studio for a while as he is relocating back to Philadelphia.  That being said we got some good talk in with the duo on many subjects including their latest project, Serious Problems, plus they let us play a brand new track called Ghostwriters from the album.  We even somehow tricked DJ Boondocks into grabbing a microphone and talking with everyone during the show at one point this week.  Big things!  The first hour was all about the music as usual including a lot of new older 207 tracks that have recently been added to the Appleton archives.  Next week we have both Ken Bell (The Big Easy) and James Read (Benchmark Multimedia) coming through for the first time and we are excited to welcome them.  Download or stream the podcast below and we’ll catch you Wednesday night at 7pm!

Cold Legistics

Here is the podcast from May 8th featuring local beat smith Cold Legistics. Chris comes through Appleton to talk about his production tactics and to talk about some of the artists he’s currently working with including Shane Reis who was also in the studio with us.  Other than that you can expect to hear plenty of local hip hop in this episode including some exclusive Cold Legistics beats. Ap Ap Appleton!

Wisdom presents Flannabis

This week we welcomed Wisdom on the show to promote his latest project, Flannabis.  Unfortunately we had to cut the show early so you’re only getting an hour and 20 minute dose of the 207.  It turns out that was plenty of time to play a few new tracks and hear about all things Wisdom.  Shupe also joins us later in the show and we all have some lively discussions about the scene.  Download or stream below and tune in next week when we bring local producer Cold Legistics on the program for the first time!

LEARN

This week we bring you another glimpse into the world of graffiti with special guest LEARN who provides a rare personal look into his history and lifestyle.  In addition to the elusive LEARN the studio was packed with other writers including RICH, TURDL, GERV, and EMBER ONE.  As always we start the show with a full hour of the latest and greatest Maine Hip Hop and then we go in with LEARN & company in the second hour.  A lot of ground was covered in this interview, Portland graffiti history, graffiti etiquette (stop tagging people’s houses!), chase stores, and more.  We had a lot of fun and will definitely  have to revisit this topic with this crew in the future on the program.  For now, stream or download the podcast below and we’ll catch you next Wednesday night!

Podcast is back – Listen to Maine Hip Hop!

Posting yet another ridiculously late podcast and for that, we apologize.  Here is our show from Wednesday April 17th where we are back from a week off.  This week we had some fun in the studio and were joined by DJ Boondocks & MC 22 who hung out with us for the entire show.  This show is all about the music, you know the drill, stream or download below and tune in every Weds night from 7 to 9!

J Jack in the Building

Here is the podcast from our last live show which took place on April 3rd.  We actually had to end the show early that night but we also started early so you end up with over 2 hours of Maine Hip Hop!  We also had J Jack in the building for most of the show and were able to speak with him about the 206 hip hop scene (his home state of Washington).  Other than that it’s all about the music so please enjoy streaming or downloading the podcast below!

Slop & Jay Caron

We are horribly late posting the podcast for last week so we will keep it brief.  In addition to playing a gang of Maine Hip Hop to kick off our 101st live podcast we welcomed both Slop & Jay Caron on the show for an interview.  We want to apologize in advance for not being able to post a picture of their magnificent beards.  Jay has been on the show a couple times with Educated Advocates but this was our first time being able to chat with Slop.  The two discuss the project they have been working on together in addition to many other topics.  Check out the podcast below and tune in every Wednesday night from 7 to 9!

The Appleton 100

We made it!  To celebrate the occasion of our 100th live show we lined up DJ Boondocks to spin beats for a live cypher  and invited a lot of past guests to stop by.  The turnout was better than we could have hoped for and we had the following people in the studio with us:  Spose, Lady Essence, Shane Reis, Frank The Barber, Case In Point, J Jack, Dynamo-P, God Damn Chan, JJ King, Doc Josh, OD and Boons!  Needless to day the cypher went down in a big way for the end of the show.  In addition to the cypher, Spose premiered one of his new tracks off the Peter Sparker project called “I’m Starving” and God Damn Chan premiered one of his new beats called “Flexxxin” off his Diamond project.  We talked with JJ King about his latest doings and of course Rap Night and got it in with a lot of our guests to celebrate 100 live shows dedicated to Maine Hip Hop, some of our favorite moments, and plenty more.  After the show we took the whole operation to Rap Night where DJ Rew blended 207 music all night before the performances kicked off.  Thank you Boondocks & Rew for helping us keep it moving for the 100th show and thank you to all our guests and listeners for keeping the movement moving for the 207!  See you next week.

Mark Curdo

Ryan Augustus & Mark Curdo

This week’s podcast features the one and only Mark Curdo of WCYY coming through to chop it up with us on many different topics.  We felt pretty fortunate that Mark agreed to come on the show and it was fun turning the tables and being able to ask him a few questions instead of the other way around.  Mark, who started his radio career at Saint Joseph’s College doing a hip hop show, has been a big supporter of all things local, including hip hop, especially on his weekly radio program Spinout which airs for 3 hours every Sunday Night on WCYY.  The first hour aims to please your ear buds with some classic 207 hip hop and quite a few brand new tracks and then we go in with Curdo. Episode 99 is in the books!  Next week we go live for the 100th time on a Wednesday and if everything goes our way DJ Boondocks will be in the house spinning beats for a 100th podcast celebration cypher!  After the show we’re taking our tracks to Rap Night where DJ Rew will be playing Maine Hip Hop all evening before showcases from Ryan Augustus, Doc Joshua, & JJ King.  We hope to see you there!
